I hate
hospitals!
There is
the irritating noise of children crying from pain and adults screaming from pain
especially those with nasty injuries like broken bones. I can’t help but wince
at the sight of a horribly twisted leg that just passed us on their way to the Orthopaedic section. What about the smell? It’s like death hovering around the
place. The disinfectants greatly compliment this deathly atmosphere.
What I hate
the most is the fact that Emma hasn’t said a word to me in the past two hours.
She doesn’t look bothered at all by the environment. I shift nervously at the
bench waiting for the doctor to bring us the bad news about my best friend Sam. The
lovely doctor arrives and we all enter her office.
The concerned Gentleman
“Samuel has
Pneumonia.” Emma can’t believe her ears. I am stunned but I recall yesterday
when I found him all drenched up after the heavy rains. I did not listen to all
her medical advice afterwards. In just a short while, I usher her out of the
office so that the other patients get their turn with the doctor.

Entrance of the AIC Litein Hospital |
We head
outside. I try to play the concerned gentleman by holding her close to me. All
goes well until we are just an earshot away from the entrance of the AIC Litein
Hospital. There she gently freed herself from my hold and turned to face me. Her
hands were crossed.
“Tony, what
happened?”
“Leo? I got
held up. In fact I was on my way.”
Was she Jealous?
She
suppressed a giggle. That was a bad sign. It meant that she was not convinced
by my bullshit tale.
“I mean at
your keja. Huyo ni nani?” So that was it. It was all about Chebet, but was she
jealous?
“Oh, huyo? She’s
just a friend. Nothing much.”
“You sell
movies hadi kwa keja?” Damn this girl. Her sarcasm was getting me nervous.
“No. why
are you this concerned?”
“You might
get caught.” She emphasized the last word. I wanted to walk away from that
spot. I could not hold my cool any longer.
“Look, just
mind your business.” I turn and walk away. I did not hear her shouts for me
to stop. Then I felt my body lift off the ground and land in a thud. Darkness covers my eyes in an instant. The faint sounds of screams slowly fades away as I pass out.
NEXT:
Another casualty.
