I want to
have a degree. And I want it soon.
The events
of the past week have given me food for thought. Most of my friends that have
just visited me are holders of degrees. Sam holds a degree from Kenyatta
University and he is currently engaged to my ex-flame Emma. She too is an
alumni of Kabianga University where she studied nursing. It is only Tom who
doesn’t have papers but he has what me and my 'learned' friends lack; world
experience.
Tom went
straight to business and where he is right now is on account of his hard work
and luck. He found a way to hide his disappointment at failing to score JAB
entry marks. He also doesn’t look bothered at all by his lack of papers.
All is not Lost.
I am
only a few months old into this movie selling business and I am starting to
hate it! I have a diploma from KIMC, the best media school in this country but
finding a job in this industry isn’t easy. Not when they are laying off people
and poaching experienced people from other rival stations (Read RMS)
they are in for the long haul. |
“Tony,
unaeza tafuta pesa ufanye School based programmes hapo Kericho during the
Holiday. Sio lazima uende Nairobi.” My father advises me before he completely
focuses on his newspaper, blocking me out. He has just given me a big break!
So if I make
at least 500 bob in a day selling other electronics and not just movies, in a
week I will have 3500. In a month it will be 14,000 if all things remain
constant. With a strong internet, I can also go for online classes. Thanks dad. All is
not lost.
But the
crippling strike currently affecting Universities mean that it won’t be
possible. And from the look of things, they might be in for the long haul. For the love of comrades and people like me, just find a peaceful solution to this stalemate!
NEXT: Sam visits minus his fiancée, what is the catch?
P.S-Theophilus Rono is my long-time friend and
brother in Christ. He is vying for the post of finance secretary UoN main
